Many of you that are following would know i travel a lot and had done so many reviews based on what i experienced and encounter with.

Here is the summary of my travel experiences in Korea for week. You will have to click in the links to read on more . Traveling in Korea is a one major decision i made. I hope some of the places I went and explored could help some of you travelers. I blog for fun and always write straight forward.

Korea Day 6 : Lotte World | carol_herbert

Strawberries were our breakfast and I went to get my coffee at one the back lane cafes they had. Once I got my coffee, we headed to the subway to get our butts to Lotte World. From Chungmuro, we took the subway towards Dongdaemun Historical Park and then headed to Jamsil. Jamsil is much nearer to Lotte World. We had to find South Gate Entrance in order to get into the theme park. When we reached Lotte World, it was like a mall attached to a hotel attached to a shopping area. I was pretty confused and was kinda walking all around following Evon.hahahahha…We stopped by a accessories shop that were having 50% discounts. Crazily bought some accessories and then headed to get our tickets. Once we entered, the feeling was as if I was entering Disneyland in LA. I was so excited. We got the map and got ready to play all the games and crazy out of this world rides and thank goodness the que wasn’t too long. God’s mercy is always with us. We went on rides and roller coasters and I bet Erica and Elaine were scared to death. I need to get a gopro soon for our next adventure then only I can capture all those crazy rides we went on. The main rides were outdoors and were called Magic Island. It was freezing but we enjoyed all the rides.

We left for Myeongdong after that. We had dinner at one of the Chinese restaurant and went on mainly for the street food. We shopped till we dropped in Myeongdong. Like seriously!!! I went to get my Innisfree products and got some tax refund. Not bad huh?? I also got some masks and some face soaps also. Evon and I went and tried this grilled lobster with cheese.

It cost us about 15000won, meaning about RM60 so we had to share. It was too ridiculous for us to pay each for a lobster. Hence, we decided to share. Two bites gone a pay for a day. Sad right .hahaha….what to do?? With our currency dropping, we can’t afford to waste money just like that. We had to choose wisely on what to spend on and what not to. After shopping and eating and being content with whatever we have, we headed back home happily and satisfied. We rushed to pack and had to get ready all our things as we need to wake up early and head out to get the first subway by 5.30am.

Our flight was at 9.30am so we had to be at the airport to check in and make sure we didn’t have to run for our lives as how we did when we took our flight from Malaysia. We bathed and wore whatever we need so that when we get up, we just need to have breakfast and straight check out and head out. What a week of journey we had in Seoul. I lost my dad’s Innisfree at the airport because I forgot to check the facial wash in. It was 180ml and wasn’t allowed in. I pleaded and beg the person but we ought to follow the rules so yeah. I had to throw it away. My money was gone just like that! HMMPPHHH next time, make sure you check your hand carry bag and make sure you don’t carry any liquid more than 100ml. i HAD LEARN A BIG LESSON FROM HERE.

My next trip will be to Krabi, Thailand.

Korea Day 5 : Nami Island + Petite France | carol_herbert

We woke up pretty early, got our breakfast and did our laundry. Breakfast was the usual bread with strawberry jam. And yes!! Coffee. I got my to go coffee almost every day since they have a lot of cafés to try with.What could I say about Nami Island or should I say Namiseom Island (남이섬 종합휴양지)? Namiseom Island is 63 km away from Seoul in the direction of Chuncheon, and is famous for its beautiful tree-lined roads. We took a bus from Gapyeong to Nami ticketing centre and took a ferry to Nami Island. The place was very cold and it was still winter. You can take the zipwire into Nami but it will cost you about 38,000 won. Crazily expensive for a short time thing that was why we acted sanely and took the ferry instead.

There was also hardened snow that we could play and take pic with. The place was filled with tourist from different nation. My worlds!! I could see the entire world in Nami. One funny thing happened was there were this China people who were willing to take our pics and they talked to us in Mandarin thinking we knew their language. The whole entire Nami Island was like a mini adventure I would say.

They gave us a map to follow and to make sure we had seen the entire Nami and wouldn’t miss any tourist spot. We started at the entrance and followed the map heading towards the winter sonata place of shooting. It was a mandatory spot for us to go and see for ourselves. There were also ostriches and birds going around pecking for food. Since its winter, the stomach gets hungry often. Even we humans also are always finding for food to eat at odd hours due to the coldness. We stopped by a stall to get some hot-dogs to nibble on while waiting for lunch. Thousands of pics we took and I was already exhausted . I don’t know how models do it with photo-shoots. I can’t even stand for just few hours.

Our stomachs were growling as we were walking nonstop the whole entire morning. We went and tried Korean packed lunch boxes ~ Dosirak. The lunch boxes were packed lunch boxes, usually made with seaweed, kimchi, sausage, gochujang, egg and rice. Actually ‪‎this is a traditional culture in ‪‎Korea. At the older generation, Korean parents prepare Dosirak for their children as they go to school. Children put their Dosirak on the charcoal burner and keep it warm until lunch time. Nowadays, Dosirak is the childhood of many Koreans.

 

After lunch we left for Petite France around 4pm. We rushed because if we were late and reached there by night, we can’t take nice pics with the buildings. We boarded the bus and headed straight there. A French cultural village set in the Korean countryside! Petite France serves as both a French cultural village and a youth training facility (Goseong Youth Training Center), and consists of 16 French-style buildings where visitors can lodge and experience French food, clothing, and household culture. The concept of Petite France encapsulates ‘flowers, stars, and the Little Prince.’

The village contains a memorial hall dedicated to Saint-Exupery, the author of the celebrated French novel, Le Petit Prince (1943) and as such it is called the Little Prince theme park. It also has a gallery displaying sculptures and paintings of le coq gaulois (the Gallic rooster), the national symbol of France; Orgel House where a 200-year-old music box plays a sweet melody; a shop that sells herbal and aromatic products; a souvenir shop; and many other locales where you can experience French culture. The village can accommodate up to 200 visitors with 34 guest rooms that hold four to ten people each. The history of the place is just magnificent. Petite France was also featured on many dramas and variety shows, such as Beethoven Virus, Secret Garden, and Running Man. We toured till around 8pm then left for Gapyeong. From Gapyeong we left for Cheongnyangni Station. We had dinner a School Food and then went on shopping at Lotte Mart in Cheongnyangni Station. Lotte Mart was like a heaven to me. Everything is so cheap and delicious and eye-catching. Even the cheap snacks were out of the mind and shoju was about RM4 there compared to Malaysia is around RM25 per bottle. Can you see the difference? I went shopping like a mad woman and went home with 2 bags full. I don’t know how I survived coming back to the guesthouse at the wee hours , cold and frozen but happy because I bought souvenirs for all.

Korea Day 3 + 4 : Jeonju + Hanok Village + Happy Memory | carol_herbert

Day 3, we took the earliest bus to Jeonju. We bought our breakfast on the way from 7Eleven. Jeonju is like a 2 hours and a half journey from Nambu Express Bus Terminal. The journey was smooth and we got to stop at one of the rest areas to pee and to get some hot food. There I tried this amazing hot honey pancake called Hotteok (호떡). It is like a sweet tasting pancake and it was filled with honey inside and fried on the pan. One hotteok costs about 1000won and it is cheap I would say for such a snack food. We reached Jeonju just in time for lunch and to check in into our hotel, Happy Memory Guesthouse. We will only staying here for a night so we just brought like a pair of cloth to change for the next day. Hard core right our travelling??

Our Korean friend Sehun brought us to Jeonju town for lunch and then we had to meet his pastor for dinner. We also went to visit on of the traditional Korean churches named Big Tree Church. The churches in Seoul had their own architecture and fine details that define one church element. The town was huge and full of things to see and do and eat. There were trees cover with beautiful fabrics and I thought it was to keep the tree warm as it was winter. Sehun told me that fabric is to attract insects during winter. The reason why tree barks were partly wrapped up is to protect them from insects that are looking for a warm place to snuggle for the winter and lay their eggs. There are similar straw mats used on pine trees in Japan called komomaki .The straw mats are taken off the trees in spring and burnt. So when the straw mats come off, that means its spring!

Dinner we ate dakgalbi bokkeumbap. It is one of the traditional must try dishes in Korea. When they served us, it was like a big round pan with stir fried spicy chicken chunks with mozzarella cheese in the middle. Sehun taught me the way of how they eat this dish. You first need to take your chopstick and gather around like a ball of cheese while it’s still cooking. With that ball of cheese, you take it and scoop it up with a piece of meat and then wrap it together with any salad and its side dishes. You can eat the meat only or make a wrap with Korean lettuce and sauce (If you want, you can put garlic in it also). Make sure to leave room for fried rice (볶음밥, Bokkeumbap). Once you are done making cheese balls and eating almost half of the dish, then you can call the waitress to bring the rice and make some fried rice together with the cheese and meat. When the girl starts frying the rice, it is like those kimchi fried rice that we know of. After dinner, pastor then took us for a cup of coffee then we headed home walking. It was a fun night out and very cold one indeed. We went towards downtown for some shopping, Baskin Robin for some ice cream and went to sing karaoke after that. Sehun’s friends also joined in along. I was a bit shy because it was like meeting new people and I don’t do socializing fast with new people. Especially singing karaoke, I feel comfortable singing with the people I am already used to and I just meet them like few hours only. It was a bit awkward and I kinda refused to sing .hahaha..Introverts problem. But it was fun seeing them singing and hitting those really high notes. Korean people can really sing!

The next day we slept in a little late as we were meeting up with another friend Kyeong Hee. We met up with her for breakfast and then headed to the market they had. She brought us to see Jeonju market and their town. It was very interesting and an eye opener. I am a person that is very interested in knowing other people’s culture and places. As you can see in my pics, we went some art places and those markets that sell so many unique foods. Located 10 minutes away from the Hanok Village, the Nambu Market is another place worth explore. Traces and bits of history can be found at the market. Ginseng, Herbal Medicine, fresh veggies and even bedding are available here at the indoor market. Soondae (Blood Sausage Soup) is the delicacy here — but too bad I just don’t know the art of appreciating pig blood sausage yet so I decided to give it a miss.

Around noon, we met up with some other friends and went for lunch at one of the restaurants in Jeonju town. We ate Budae jjigae (I think). It literally translates to army stew. During the U.S. occupation of Korea during the Korean War, locals were introduced to such American delicacies as Spam and hot dogs, and ended up making this bizarre and utterly tasty mishmash of Korean and American foods, starring random meats backed up by kimchi, ramen noodles, tofu, and more. It gets its spice from the kimchi, plus both gochugaru and gochujang. (The thinking goes: the spicier the better, because then you get to drink more beer.)

Then we decided to hit for some Korean dessert. The Koreans brought us to Korean Dessert Café to try the original bingsu. I tried mango and almond. The ice milk they used to craft the ice cream is mainly shaved ice, milk, syrups, fruits, and a bunch of other ingredients it is called Bingsu. We also explored the street food such as octopus skewers, grilled cheese skewers and the colorful cotton candy. I would think I was insane by eating all those yummy food and my stomach could even take in as long as I am walking. HAHHAHA

Once our tummy is filled with all the amazing food and dessert, we headed to go and rent our traditional Hanboks. Hanboks are simply an example of traditional Korean dress. We searched high and low for cheap rentals as we were just going to rent it for an hour or so. Our itinerary was very tight and we were trying our very best to get a taste of Jeonju as fast as possible. Time wasn’t our best friend though. One of my friend spotted and asked for us whether we could at least rent the Hanboks for about KW10000 (it’s about RM38) . Thank God we found an aunty and uncle that were willing to rent at that price. Many shops were renting the hanboks and it as if they were having competitions and tourist like me will feel the pinch as our MYR isn’t helping to the extent we would just rent out to whatever price they say. We had to bargain and keep looking out for those cheap one.

The aunty was very nice. She suggested a few colors that suits our skin colors and made sure the size was right. I was gaining lots of weight because I was eating rice most of the time and my face was getting rounder and rounder. Thank goodness we all fitted in. My worst nightmare was nothing fits in, I will be so sad and devastated. I came all these way, crossing thousands of miles and nothing fits in?? I will sit and roll on the floor. We all fitted into our hanboks and headed towards the Hanok Cultural Village. It was a good hike to burn all those calories we gained. We were like the models for the day. Our friends were the official photographers and we were posing for no reason. It was very fun and tiring at the same time. One thing I know for sure is that the Koreans are very good at arts and crafts. The village’s walls were painted uniquely and each painting had its own taste. Certain items such as gas cylinder were also part of the arts where they painted it as 2 love birds. My pics will tell you guys the story. I was so mesmerized with the scenery and the people there. The old people I had come across apparently appears to be more healthy and stronger than us younger ones. Funny isn’t it? We explored the whole Hanok Village and took thousands of pics. Keeping time on track, we had to return the hanboks as we were only given an hour. After returning, we headed to down town to shop and explore and get some light souvenirs. We went for Korean BBQ buffet at one of the famous restaurants in Jeonju. We tried their Samgyupsal. Samgyupsal is another popular Korean meat dish that is enjoyed at home or at Korean restaurants that specializes in meat dishes. It consists of thick pork strips, served in the same fashion as galbi but there is no marination involved. It is usually cooked on a grill with pa muchim, kimchi, mushrooms, garlic, and onions and are consumed altogether. We had to wait for almost half an hour to be seated imagine that!! The meat served was humongous. They keep refilling the meat as we just sat down to eat. Come on!!! Give us like 5mins to breathe can?? hahahhaa… the meat was super fresh and meaty!! They serve with soy bean soup and several of side dishes. I ate my heart out. I felt as if I am gonna die due to fullness. After dinner, we took a cab and rushed to our bus station. We said our goodbyes to Sehun and Kyeong Hee. It was sad but I know we will somehow go back to Korea soon because we aren’t done exploring Seoul to the fullest. We took our bus back to Chungmuro and slept in like a baby once we reached our guesthouse. We needed to rest as the next day we need to explore Nami Island and Petite France.

3am we left for Seremban to park my car so that we could take a Grabcar to Klia2 airport to catch our 7.35am flight. God knows he was searching for my cousin’s house and he was late like almost half and hour. We rush into the car and he drove really carefully. My girls were like are you freakin serious? Can’t you go more than 120 km/h? OMGGEEEE … we were super late and we rushed all the way to check in the bags and we thought that we already checked in right, so no need to go through counter. But who knows we needed to verify our documents just because it’s an international flight. My worlds!!! We literally ran till the boarding gate passing through 2 times of scanning and customs. My goodness!!! Guess what.. the doors were CLOSED!! :.(((((( I was so devastated but really prayed to God to have mercy on us and who knows they let us in. Thank God for that one miracle we had.

We landed about late evening around 3pm and once we cleared customs, we left to take the subway to check in into our guesthouse. The guesthouse was situated near Chungmuro Station and it was kinda funny because we were heading at the wrong directions all the time and had to ask people around to help us find our way. It was almost 1° outside we were frozen like a dead fish. Anyways, we straight checked into Come On Guesthouse (waited for almost few minutes, going to be frozen, managed to settle down) and headed to Namsan Tower. Can you believe we had to explore the tower by climbing dunno how many stairs?? My godddd!!! I don’t know how we survived but we did. As we climbed up slowly (dunno how many hundreds stairs), the view of the entire Seoul took my breath away. It was super pretty and so colorful. I had videos in my Instagram. Go check it out. Half way through we smelled those Korean snacks frying inside a small hut and the smell of coffee at night and it was a luxury. Although I can’t take coffee at night, the smell satisfied my hunger. I just ordered hot chocolate to ease my coldness as we weren’t really adjusting to the coldness there yet.

Up at Namsam tower, I saw many love locks just below the tower, the same ones as in Paris. People were all walking in pairs at least and non-single. I was quite shocked to see the culture there where couples were a dominant race there compared to on gang of friends or even singles. My friends all told me that the norm is to be attached. If you aren’t attached means you are not really doing well and kinda not in the market value, sad but it’s true in Korea. Some of my single Koreans friends feels it when we asked them, why you don’t have bf or gf. Anyways, after reaching the tower, we couldn’t really go in coz the waiting time was 50mins. We decided to just roam around and take pic and head back for dinner.

 

Dinner wise, we ate nearby our Chungmuro Subway Station, the place where our lodging was. We went to BFC fried chicken and beer place. It was the nearest and easiest to find. Quite a lot of people were eating there too. Thank God we had a place and we dined in hungrily. We ordered some of the most popular marinades for South Korean-style chicken are soy sauce and garlic, but the quintessential flavor which is a sweet and spicy coating chicken with soy sauce. We also ordered fried cheese sticks which are also one of the famous must try dishes in Korea. Variety of side dishes we had and it was satisfying. We went to bed dead tired and we slept well. Thank you Jesus.
