In April, not long time ago, i received my USA work and travel cheque. It was sort of my tax refund where when i was working at USA they told me i could get a refund from it. Basically it was just a simple voucher and i was to cash it in through any international banks in Malaysia. It was kinda stupid lah..Actually any bank can do this transaction but dunno why it was too complicated. I first went to Maybank because i thought i could do that there. But who knows my application was rejected after a week. I was pretty upset as i took leave on that day and you are telling me i can’t cash it in? You must be kidding me!!! Anyways i told my mum to get it from the bank and post it to me immediately. Yea post it as i was working in another state. Such a life.
So when i got my cheque , most of my friends told me that we are to cash it using an international bank. In Malaysia, the 2 main banks are Standard Chartered and HSBC. I went and tried Standard Chartered. Took a half day leave , thinking i could settle it fast as my cheque only is valid for a year. I went there and sent of my friend to HSBC as she prefers the bank . Whatever so, i felt a lil cheated. Knowing that i wanted to cash in the cheque i was told that we would need like a relationship for a year , then only the bank can cash it in. I was like what the fish? This can’t be happening to me again. They did open up an account for me as i wanted and i got like a medical insurance under them. Quite a good start but a bad ending lah. I didn’t have any medical insurance so it was pretty a thing to sign up for it. RM100 per month, 70% the bank will absorb and use it for the insurance purpose and 30% will be considered as my savings if i didn’t use it .
Back to the cheque, devastated i was , i prayed to God. I told HIM that if he really wants me to use the money for HIS thy kingdom , he needs to open doors for me to cash it in. Otherwise the cheque will be of no god use. Such a waste isn’t it? OKay fine. I was done for the day. Tired, angry and annoyed, me and my friend went for desserts to calm our souls down. You wouldn’t know such a hassle we have been through for just an international cheque. We went to quite a nice place to have some ice-cream and popcorn.
Moving on. We decided to take another day off to try HSBC bank. Apparantly, most of the people in the bank who went to this program called the work and travel USA said that HSBC can accept the cheque. So this time we were prepared. Never ever say that you are going to open an account in HSBC just because you wanna cash in the cheque. Never will they allow you to do so. Just let them know that you are going to open a savings account and save under them. They will ask you tons of questions so please be prepared. Don’t even try to lie to them because they will eventually find it out. Just open an account and cash the cheque like maybe a month or two later on. By then they can’t do anything but accept the cheque. Mine i couldn’t open the account there on that day as they said my identification card was registered under my staying in state. I am working in another state so they didn’t quite allow me to open unless i have proves that i am staying here. So i was needed to provide them with utility bills with signature and prove that i am staying here in johor. Such a hassle and it was kinda stupid. People want to open account and start savings with you and you are like making such a hassle. You will lose business like that man. Plus , why the bank need to worry if people wanna open or close it at any time? It is our business. If you are a good bank , you need not worry .
Lessons learned isn’t it? Easier for you who are planning to go for a work and travel program. Especially Malaysians. Always open either one of these 2 banks mentioned above and make sure that you have a year relationship with them. Never take things for granted as you will know the hassle when it comes to your turn.
